Dear DocXXX,
You're probably going to laugh at this question, but here goes. My wife and I are trying to have a baby, but haven't had much success getting pregnant. The doctor recommended that I get a fertility test done. The only problem is that I'm having qualms about going in for it. How exactly do they retrieve the semen for analysis? Are there machines or needles that do it or is it just done by hand?
-- Count Sperm
Count,
You really have nothing to fear. Yes, the sperm sample is collected 'by hand' -- your hand to be exact. If you happen to live close enough to the clinic, you can perform the 'procedure' at home and then bring the specimen in via thermos. Otherwise, most fertility clinics have a small room with several magazines and videos to help you 'retrieve' your sample. If you so choose, some clinics will let your wife in to help you out.
Rest easy, there are no machines or needles going to be aimed at your privates. It's a much more pleasant procedure than all that, and absolutely nothing to get worked up about. So to speak.
