Dear DocXXX,

I have heard the term 'French Tickler' bandied about by some of my friends, and am embarrassed to admit that I don't know what that is! I was hoping you would explain...

-- Not Tickled Pink

Dear Tickled,

A 'French Tickler' is a slang term for a condom designed with extra rubber, plastic or latex protrusions. These often take the shape of small animals or plants, or sometimes patterns of ribs, ridges and nubs.

Many men believe that these extra 'stimulators' will increase sexual pleasure in their female partners during sex. In truth, though, most women can't feel the difference. Since the center of sexual pleasure for most women is the clitoris, and since only the outer third of the vagina has sexually sensitive nerve endings, most of these little extras will tend to have a negligible effect.

The exception are the type that are designed to go around the base of or along the entire length of the penis. Many couples find that these really do enhance sex, since the clitoris is actually in some contact with the little rubber 'extras.'

You should also be aware that all of these devices are sold 'for novelty use only.' None of them should be used in place of real condoms, and should not be used for either birth control or protection from STDs. They are strictly for fun, which is, after all, what sex is all about!
