Dear DocXXX,
Ever since I started having them, I have gotten my periods at about the same exact time every month. I recently started college and am living with another girl in the dorms. Now it seems that my period is coming almost a week earlier than it ever has before! I have heard that being around different people influences when you get it, but I always thought this was a myth. Now I'm thinking that it might actually be true! Well, which is it?
-- Synchronicity at Syracuse
Dear Synch --,
Well, it's not just a myth. It is a well-established scientific fact that women living together often develop synchronized menstrual cycles. Although the exact reason that this happens is still a matter of debate, most folks think that it has something to do with pheromones. Interestingly, it seems that the pheromones can be either male or female.
In one study, a group of women had a man's underarm perspiration placed above their upper lip once a day for several weeks. Within a few weeks, all of the women were reporting that their cycles had changed and were now synchronized, even though the women had never actually met one another! It's for this reason that many women report that their cycle changes when they start having sex regularly or living with a man.
In your case, it appears that being around other women more than you have in the past is altering your cycle. If you continue living in the same environment, it will probably stabilize to a new schedule. There's no danger in this and no reason to be worried. It's just one of nature's little mysteries that helps remind us that there are still plenty of things out there that humans just don't understand.
