Dear DocXXX,
Is it possible to contract an STD even if you're still a virgin? I've never had any kind of sexual contact, but I worry that I have herpes or some other STD. My mother always said you could catch them in a variety of ways, but lately I've been hearing different things from my friends. Who's right?
-- Nervous Nelly
Dear Nelly,
Relax. There is little or no way that you could have contracted herpes or any other STD. These diseases are called 'Sexually Transmitted Diseases' because that's exactly what they are! They are passed from person to person through sexual contact. If you've never had any sort of sexual contact, you almost certainly could not have an STD
Although there are a couple of STDs that can be caught in other ways, it is highly unusual and definitely unlikely. You're not going to catch anything from a toilet seat, for instance, despite what your mother may have told you. If there's something specific bothering you, such as bumps or a rash, you should see your doctor because it might be something treatable. But it's probably not an STD!
