Dear DocXXX,
Everyone knows that shaving hair makes it return thicker. Is this also true with pubic hair? I don't actually plan on shaving it, just trimming it a bit, but I don't want it to grow back thicker than it is now! So what's the story?
-- Hairy Situation
Dear Hairy,
While 'everyone' may know that shaving hair makes it grow back thicker, this is in fact just an old wives' tale -- or an urban legend, as they're now known in deference to old wives. Hair doesn't actually grow back thicker when you shave it, it just looks that way.
When you shave you scrape off a layer of dead skin, making your skin look lighter and the new growth appear darker -- and therefore appear thicker. In addition, you've shaved off old, damaged hair, and new undamaged hair grows back in its place. This also might look thicker because it's not damaged, but it's not actually any thicker at all.
So you should go ahead and trim your pubes if that's what you want to do. It won't make much of a difference either way, at least as far as the thickness of the hair goes. Just do what makes you feel good about your pubic hair, whether that means shaving it, trimming it or leaving it alone.
