Dear DocXXX,
My friends and I have a bet on this one -- How old does a man have to be to get a woman pregnant? Can he ever be too young or to old?
-- Wondering In Washington
Dear Wondering,
Well, obviously a man is not capable of getting anyone pregnant until he's able to ejaculate, so he has to at least have gone through puberty. But for the first year or so after puberty, when boys first begin to have orgasms and ejaculations, their sperm count is quite low. It's only a couple of years after puberty that most boys become fertile.
Conversely, barring health problems, most men remain fertile for their entire lives. There are lots of well-documented cases of men well into their 80s and 90s having children -- Pablo Picasso is the most famous example. This is because men never experience anything like menopause, as women do. Of course, whether a man would want to have a child in his 90s is another question entirely!
I hope I've cleared this up for you -- and I hope you win your bet!
